This blog is dedicated to the Star of David, its history, its various meanings and usages in different cultures. It includes thousands of pictures of Star of David, six-pointed stars, hexagrams, Solomon’s Seals, Magen Davids and yellow badges, and served as a resource for three books and four art exhibitions.

The Magen David (Shield of David, or as it is more commonly known, the Star of David) is the symbol most commonly associated with Judaism today, but it is actually a relatively new Jewish symbol. It is supposed to represent the shape of King David’s shield (or perhaps the emblem on it), but there is really no support for that claim in any early rabbinic literature. The symbol is not mentioned in rabbinic literature until the middle ages, and is so rare in early Jewish literature and artwork that art dealers suspect forgery if they find the symbol in early Jewish works.

Scholars such as Franz Rosenzweig have attributed deep theological significance to the symbol. For example, some note that the top triangle strives upward, toward G-d, while the lower triangle strives downward, toward the real world. Some note that the intertwining makes the triangles inseparable, like the Jewish people. Some say that the three sides represent the three types of Jews: Kohanim, Levites and Israel. Some note that there are actually 12 sides (3 exterior and 3 interior on each triangle), representing the 12 tribes. While these theories are theologically interesting, they have little basis in historical fact.

The symbol of intertwined equilateral triangles is a common one in the Middle East and North Africa, and is thought to bring good luck. It appears occasionally in early Jewish artwork, but never as an exclusively Jewish symbol. The nearest thing to an “official” Jewish symbol at the time was the menorah.

In the middle ages, Jews often were required to wear badges to identify themselves as Jews, much as they were in Nazi Germany, but these Jewish badges were not always the familiar Magen David. For example, a fifteenth century painting by Nuno Goncalves features a rabbi wearing a six-pointed badge that looks more or less like an asterisk.

In the 17th century, it became a popular practice to put Magen Davids on the outside of synagogues, to identify them as Jewish houses of worship in much the same way that a cross identified a Christian house of worship; however, I have never seen any explanation of why this symbol was chosen, rather than some other symbol.

The Magen David gained popularity as a symbol of Judaism when it was adopted as the emblem of the Zionist movement in 1897, but the symbol continued to be controversial for many years afterward. When the modern state of Israel was founded, there was much debate over whether this symbol should be used on the flag.

Today, the Magen David is the universally recognized symbol of Jewry. It appears on the flag of the state of Israel, and the Israeli equivalent of the Red Cross is known as the Red Magen David.

The Star of David above the American Eagle’s Head on the Back of the One Dollar Bill

The Star of David above the American Eagle's Head on the Back of the One Dollar Bill

Curiously, the Great Seal of the United States appears to contain an image of a Star of David. At the top of the obverse side of the Great Seal is a cluster of thirteen stars shaped in a very obvious “Star of David” shape, consisting of 13 smaller American Stars probably symbolizing the 13 original colonies, above the eagle’s head. This image is also found on the reverse side of the U.S. one dollar bill. No-one is absolutely sure today why that is so. Some historians think it was a way of showing gratitude to Haym Solomon (1740-1785) who was Jewish and is acknowledged as the prime financier of the American side during the American Revolution and the American Revolutionary War of 1776, which many are not aware of. Some maintain Solomon designed the great seal himself.

Another reason has been postulated that perhaps it was a way of the Founding Fathers of the United States acknowledging the God of the Hebrew Bible because of their strong devotion to the “Old Testament” as a guide to life. Others have seen more sinister reasons that actually border on anti-Semitic conspiracy theories.

Whatever, the reasons may be, there is no question, that the shape of the Star of David is clearly emblazoned on the US’ Great Seal and on all US one dollar bills today.

Judeo/Christian Quotables, Part IV. American Politics

In invoking ‘Judeo-Christian values,’ Ryan is stunning in his hyprocrisy,..Why did Ryan stoop so low as to bring religious prejudice into the race at the last minute and to appeal to the lowest instincts of the electorate? Why did he get so ugly? Because he believes that the Republicans are losing. And he is showing his true values by demonstrating that he will do anything or say anything to get elected.

Judeo/Christian Quotables, Part III. The Kabala

In fact the Kabbalah rests upon the exoteric Judeo-Christian tradition. It consists of metaphysics and philosophy, from which can be drawn a mystical way, which is applied and regulated through personal asceticism.

A Short Review of the 24 Elders of the Judeo/Christian Zodiac (12 Sons/Tribes + 12 Apostles)

There was a rainbow around the throne, like an emerald in appearance. Around the throne were 24 thrones; and upon the thrones I saw 24 elders sitting, clothed in white garments, and golden crowns on their heads.

– Revelation 4:3-4

Who are the 24 Elders of the Zodiac? Well, they are not Angels because Angels never grow old, and they are not ghosts, because in Heaven all souls are awake and live. Basically, the 24 Elders mentioned in the Book of Revelation has nearly always been understood as the 12 Sons/Tribes of Israel plus the 12 Apostles of Christianity for a total of 24 Elders. Using the traditional Signs of the Zodiac as a reference point, these 24 individuals can be listed as follows:

Zebulun, Joseph, Benjamin, Issachar, Judah, Naphtali, Asher, Dan, Gad, Simeon, Reuben, Levi, Peter, Simon, James, Andrew, John, Phillip, Bartholomew, Thomas, James, Matthew, (Jude) Thaddeus, Matthias

The following two sets of 12 individuals may not be named specifically in the Book of Revelation, but the equation stating: 12 Tribes + 12 Apostles = 24 Elders of the Judeo/Christian Tradition seems to make the most sense considering all the other possibilities. Here in numerical order are the correlations of the 12 Tribes of Israel when compared to the Zodiac (The 12 Tribal Elders of the Judeo/Christian Zodiac), followed by the correlations of the 12 Apostles of Christianity when compared to the Zodiac (The 12 Saintly Elders of the Judeo/Christian Zodiac).

Comparing Sense and Nonsense about the Star of David

Image

Tragically, when it comes to the Star of David, there seems to be far too many Jew-hating, race-baiting, clearly exclusionary voices which almost always seem to come from the Protestant Christian Community. In the end it is quite sad that these clearly hostile, and possibly violent, lunatics literally drown out any and all of the more reasonable voices with their so-called independent Bible ‘research’ which purports to ‘prove’ the inherently evil origins of Jews, Judaism, and of course the Star of David. In order to fight back against these Protestant ‘Christian’ hate-mongers, a three-part comparison between SENSE and NONSENSE as it relates to the Star of David can be reads as follows:

____________________________

ImageIt is not a Jewish symbol, but an occult symbol.

– The “Star of David” is Pagan, Jesus-is-Savior.com

SENSE: The Star of David is a widely recognized symbol of Judaism, named after King David of ancient Israel. (Star of David, New World Encyclopedia)
NONSENSE: It is not a Jewish symbol, but an occult symbol. (The “Star of David” is Pagan, Jesus-is-Savior.com)
EVEN MORE SENSE: Most people today associate the six pointed star (hexagram) with the Jewish Star of David (Magen David), as it is the modern symbol of Jewish identity and Judaism. In 1948 it was even adopted on the official flag of Israel. According to Wikipedia: “Its use as a symbol of the Jewish community dates to the 17th century.” (The Six-Pointed Star of Armenia, WordPress.com)

JUDAS MACCABAEUS: The Star of David is either a Jewish symbol or an Occult symbol. It cannot be both, because the Occult has been opposed to Judaism and also the Jewish people, for literally thousands of years. The claim that it is not a Jewish symbol when Jews around the world say that it is appears to a serious denial of reality.

Image
SENSE: The Star of David and the five-pointed star are both symbols associated with Christianity. (Christian Star, Christian Symbols, About.com)
NONSENSE: The “Star of David” is Pagan. (Jesus-is-Savior.com)
A LOT MORE SENSE: While predominately recognized as a symbol of Judaism and Israel, many Christians identify with the Star of David as well. (Christian Star, Christian Symbols, About.com)
JUDAS MACCABAEUS: The Star of David is either a Pagan or Christian symbol. It cannot be both, because Christianity is not a Pagan religion and to say an age-old Christian symbol like the Star of David is Pagan is to basically say that Christianity is Pagan, a contradiction in terms which makes no sense whatsoever.

Star of David OR Star of Lucifer?

– Great Joy in Great Tribulation, MoreSureWord.com

Image

SENSE: Lucifer is a Latin word which signifies the ‘morning star’. (Morning Star – Philologos, Philologos.org)
NONSENSE: Star of David OR Star of Lucifer? (Great Joy in Great Tribulation, MoreSureWord.com)
SOME MORE SENSE: The Star of David is a six-pointed star formed by two interlocking triangles, one pointing up, one pointing down….In the book of Revelation, Jesus is called the Morning Star – Revelation 2:28, Revelation 22:16. (Christian Star, About.com)
A FINAL SENSE: The name Lucifer originally denotes the planet Venus, emphasizing its brilliance…Metaphorically, the word is applied…finally to Jesus Christ Himself (II Peter 1:19; Apocalypse 22:16, “Exultet” of Holy Saturday) the true light of our spiritual life. (Lucifer, by Anthony John Maas. Catholic Encyclopedia 1913)

JUDAS MACCABAEUS: First of all, to even suggest that the Star of David may be the Star of Lucifer is to blindly assume that the Devil, the enemy of King David, Israel, the Jews and Judaism is in fact called ‘Lucifer’. Considering the known fact that Lucifer is simply Morning Star in the Latin language, then it may well be more appropriate to think of Jesus Christ as Lucifer, who is indeed a direct descendant of the Royal House of David symbolized by the Six-Pointed ‘Morning’ Star of David..

Image
REALITY: The Star of David is NOT a symbol of the Occult. It was and is an official symbol of Judaism.
REALITY: The Star of David is NOT a Pagan symbol. It is a Christian symbol.
REALITY: The Star of David is NOT the Star of Lucifer. It is the family Coat-of-Arms of Rabbi Jesus, a genuine symbol of Jesus Christ the bright, Morning Star.

God bless reality and may God bless you all.

Patiently Answering a Misled and Confused Protestant Christian’s Accusations with Logic and Historical Facts

The Roman Catholic Mass is a Satanic mockery of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for the sins of the world!

Adam Weishaupt, a Catholic Jesuit priest [created] the Illuminati in 1776 as a front group for the Jesuits, and in reorganizing the Freemasons. They used the Jewish Talmud, a book of Jewish traditions and antichrist principles, to gain control.

– Kevin Lucier, a MISLED AND CONFUSED Protestant writer and publisher at Glorybound.net

What follows below is an exchange of writings between myself, Judas Maccabaeus (Jason Nicholas Corning, a Catholic from Wenatchee, WA) and Kevin Lucier, a certain Protestant Christian writer and owner of an outrageously hateful website called Glorybound.net. For the purposes of simplicity, Mr. Kevin Lucier’s online writings are designated by the words ‘MISLED AND CONFUSED’ while the written response of Judas Maccabaeus is termed ‘A CONCERNED CATHOLIC BELIEVER’. Here are two essential portions of this ongoing exchange:

THE MISLED AND CONFUSED: The Roman Catholic Mass is a Satanic mockery of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for the sins of the world!
A CONCERNED CATHOLIC BELIEVER: The Roman Catholic Mass is literally based upon the practices and rituals of the Temple of Jerusalem during the time of Jesus as well as long before. The chants, recitations, and songs found in the first part of the Catholic Mass (called the Liturgy of the Word) are extremely similar if not sometimes identical to the daily religious practices of the Jews at the Temple of Jerusalem. The bread and wine offerings of the Temple are now what Catholics call the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Also, the bread and wine of Communion symbolize the body and blood of the daily lamb sacrifice at the Temple of Jerusalem- a Hebrew practice which dates back as far in history as Abel, the son of Adam and Eve (~ 3770 BC)

THE MISLED AND CONFUSED: Adam Weishaupt, a Catholic Jesuit priest [created] the Illuminati in 1776 as a front group for the Jesuits, and in reorganizing the Freemasons. They used the Jewish Talmud, a book of Jewish traditions and antichrist principles, to gain control.
A CONCERNED CATHOLIC BELIEVER: It is a historical fact that Adam Weishaupt was never ordained as a Catholic Priest, let alone a Jesuit Priest. Founded in 1776, Adam Weishaupt’s organization achieved a short lifespan of popular support but was basically extinct by the end of the year 1785, or as Trevor W. McKeown notes ‘In March and August 1785…the Order (Illuminati) began to decline, so that by the end of the eighteenth century it had ceased to exist.’ (A Bavarian Illuminati primer, by Trevor W. McKeown). There is absolutely no historical evidence that the Illuminati, or its Founder Adam Weishaupt, knew anything at all about the Jewish Talmud and none of their writings ever mention this ancient Jewish religious text.

CATHOLIC MASS: The Catholic sacrifice of the Mass is taken from the Jewish rituals and has slight influences brought in from Roman and other Middle Eastern civilizations. However, the Mass is modeled on the Jewish synagogue meetings and the temple sacrifices, hence its division from a strictly didactic format (the first half of Mass) to a form of ritual worship and sacrifice (the latter half).

THE ILLUMINATI: The Order [of the Illuminati] was at first very popular, and enrolled no less than two thousand names upon its registers…. Its Lodges were to be found in France, Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Hungary, and Italy. Knigge Baron Adolph Knigge (1752 – 1796), who was one of its most prominent working members, and the auther of several of its Degrees, was a religious man, and would never have united with it had its object been, as has been charged, to abolish Christianity. But it cannot be denied, that in the process of time abuses had crept into the Institution and that by the influence of unworthy men, the system became corrupted; yet the course accusations of Barruel and Robison are known to be exaggerated, and some of them altogether false…. The Edicts [on June 22, 1784, for its suppression] of the Elector of Bavaria [Duke Karl Theodor] were repeated in March and August, 1785 and the Order began to decline, so that by the end of the eighteenth century it had ceased to exist.

Concise Meanings of the Names of the 12 Sons and the 12 Tribes of Israel

The twelve tribes (clans) of Israel derive from the twelve sons of Jacob, aka “Israel.” These sons/tribes were, in order of birth, Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and Benjamin. Levi became the priest tribe, not one of the twelve, while Joseph split into two tribes named after the sons of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim.

Concise Meanings of the Names of the 12 Minor Prophets

The term “Minor Prophets” refers to the reported authors of the twelve short prophetic texts included within the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) as well as the Christian Old Testament. While the title places those books in contrast to the major prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and (in some Christian Bibles) Daniel)…the term simply refers to the book’s respective lengths.

– Minor Prophets, New World Encyclopedia

Here is a brief list of the 12 Minor Old Testaments Prophets in chronological order as they appear in the Bible. Not only are these the 12 Minor Prophets of the Hebrew Bible, they are also the last 12 Books of the Christian Old Testament including all forms of Christianity (Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox, Other). After each name is the meaning of what the word actually means in Hebrew:

Last 12 Books of the Christian Old Testament
1. Hosea: Salvation
2. Joel: The LORD is God
3. Amos: Strong
4. Obadiah: Servant of God
5. Jonah: Dove
6. Micah: Who is like God?
7. Nahum: Comfort
8. Habakkuk: Embrace
9. Zephaniah: Hidden or protected by God
10. Haggai: Festive
11. Zechariah: Whom the LORD remembered
12. Malachi: Angel, messenger

The Minor Prophets, whose exhortations were recorded on a single scroll in the classical Hebrew (and only separated when the text came to be translated), run the gamut of Israelite/Jewish history—from the Assyrian period to the Persian. In doing so, they address strikingly varied audiences, from broken-hearted exiles to hopeful builders of a new temple. In spite of this, they consistently stressed a single, primary thesis: that they were God’s chosen people, that it behooved them to behave accordingly, and that, in the end, history would vindicate the faithful. In this way (and in spite of their varied historical perspectives), all of the twelve, in their hopeful proclamations and baneful exhortations, were conditioned by this singular perspective.
